Backyard Pond - DIY

Posted by on March 24, 2009

I used to think that a family with a backyard pond is a very lucky family or a rich one - or maybe both. Now it is clear to all of us that we can have a backyard pond, we only need to have some room for it. It’s just a matter of learning what steps are involved, working out a small design and doing the work of putting it in. It’s no longer a heavy burden that it once was.

These ponds are a great thing if you are after fun and enjoyment. They used to be a bigger headache than they are today, because the new technology associated with backyard ponds offer an environment that is more ecologically balanced, look completely natural, are very low maintenance, and make for an excellent habitat for fish, turtles and other wildlife. Most of them are clean and crystal clear while the growth of algae is easily controlled.

It is easy to find a proffesional contractor that is willing to construct a water garden for you, or to design a cute little fish pond. You can also choose the DIY path and purchase all those pieces separately. As an extra convenience there are even pond kits that come with everything you need (except the place to put it!) All the hassles aside, backyard ponds are a source of great tranquility in the garden and place to just sit and think.

Usually, backyard ponds are placed in such a way that they can be seen from patio or a window and most of them are smaller in size. Owning one is a chance to relax and enjoy in the view by yourself or with your family. I bet your children would love the wildlife a new backyard pond will attract, and it surely will.

The backyard ponds I like are the ones that have a small beach built in and those that use flexible liner to get unique designs. You will need this small graduation so that the critters could get inside and outside while the birds will be able to dip into the water, just how they love it. It just another way to keep your pond special, tranquil and a beautiful addition to your home.

Your Epoxy Floors Has Bubbles?

Posted by on March 24, 2009

I can bet you have seen quite a number of epoxy flooring with bubbles on them. Bubbles are usually observed to be the size of a pinhead or more than an inch in diameter. They are found in the entire floor or as a group. “Out gasing” phenomenon is what usually causes this. And it happens when the epoxy begins to dry up. Because the temperature rises, air is hotter and it expands into a bubble under the epoxy coating.

To prevent bubbles being formed in epoxy floors application of a primer is recommended. Make sure that you do not apply epoxy coating where there is direct sunlight and it would be good to use a drill with slower speed to mix the coating.

Use medium roller if you already decided to use one. Use gentle and slow motions when you are applying your epoxy paint. This helps to prevent bubble appearance on the epoxy garage paint.

Bubbles that are formed in epoxy floorings can be removed using grit sandpaper and a rotary scrubber. The first step is to roughen the area with some sandpaper. And then get to dust cleaning. Then with a rag wipe the surface area with a strong solvent. When you finish this, apply one more coating. Another type of bubble observed is fisheyes. The silicone that remained on the surface is one of the reasons.

You can easily clean this with scrubbing the problematic area with a sandpaper. After this, scrupulously clean the area with a rag dipped in solvent. It is now the time to apply the coating you prepared.

If there are bubbles in the entire epoxy flooring area then shot blasting or sand blasting may be considered. Use sand blaster to remove the epoxy coat from the area you are working on. You also need to clean the entire area with an acid. You can isolate the entire area, in case it is rather small. You will need to repair the area first and the you will have to make a new coating.

The moisture is one more reason why bubbles appear in our epoxy garage floors. To verify this break one of the blisters thus formed and see if there is any moisture inside.

Lighting Tips for your Bedroom

Posted by on March 24, 2009

Good bedroom lighting considers a careful mixture of practical and psychological factors. The average bedroom has so many different uses - relaxation, intimacy, study, morning preparation - that covering them all can be tricky.

We associate the bedroom with, among other things, sleep. This usually means no lighting at all. That suggests that turning them off should not be a chore. If you’ve been laying in bed reading it can be annnoying to turn them off, especially if you’ve gotten very tired. A main control switch within reach is a great thing here.

That nighttime reading can be a strain on the eyes, leading to fatigue and headaches. Banish the problem by installing lights in the proper places with the correct color.

Color? Does that mean you should get pink or blue light bulbs? No. Color, here, means ‘color temperature’. Good reading lights are designed to emulate the range of wavelengths given off by natural sunlight, which is determined in part by the temperature of the sun’s surface. Humans’ eyes evolved to be sharpest under those conditions. Getting bulbs and lamps labeled as close to that will provide comfortable reading conditions.

But sometimes, you just want a pleasant ambiance, not a practical light. That, too, should be thought about when coming up with the lighting scheme for the bedroom.

To provide a cheery atmosphere that also provides needed light to tie shoes, connect a tricky clasp, brush hair or do any other common task, place lamps appropriately. Here again keep the light above the eyes, but let it shine directly down. In a home with modern furniture its also important to make sure the light style matches the modern seating selected. Raising it too high creates deep shadows that can hinder makeup application, make clothing color judgment more difficult and so on. Too low and it shines in your eyes, making those tasks harder. Choose a pleasing middle level.

Select and place lamps about a foot higher than where your eyes are, and allow them to reflect light off surfaces. That gives the must needed indirect light style that gives a calming feeling. Whether for romance or just a quiet time away from distractions, that produces a calming effect that is just right in the bedroom.

Morning time is when most people, both kids and adults, will be up and preparing to meet the day. But, depending on the time of the day and season of the year, the sun doesn’t always cooperate to provide the illumination needed. The way the house is oriented makes a big difference, too, so do any wall hangings, curtains or overhangs.

For overall illumination - for entering the room, vacuuming and a hundred other common tasks - a broad ambient lighting scheme is needed. A house with contemporary furniture can really benefit from a creative lighting style.  A central fixture with a strong lamp and a diffusing cover is often just the thing. For additional bedroom deisngs additional lighting pieces will be needed. There are often many corners, nooks and other places in a bedroom where deep shadows can hide.

For all of the above applications a dimmer switch, or at least multi-level bulbs, can allow for finer control of light and shadow. They can also allow for some small electricity savings if the light stays on for extended periods. A 300-watt halogen bulb can make for quite a high monthly electric bill. Dimming it when lower illumination is enough slices that down.

Consider all the ways you use your bedroom and light accordingly.

Posted by on March 15, 2009

Are you such a homeowner who wishes to have your kitchen remodeling done?  Whether you are just looking to change the appearance of your home or increase the value of it, there may be a good chance that you are.  If so, do you plan on doing your own remodeling?Though it can be somewhat difficult because a large number of homeowners decide to do kitchen remodeling by themselves even though they do not have any experience on home improvement. Although it is possible to remodel your own kitchen, without any prior home improvement experience, you may, at least, want get some training.  You can do this with a kitchen remodeling class, course, or training seminar.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling courses, one of the most commonly asked questions is why.  The answer is the training that you will receive.  Depending on the type of kitchen remodeling course, class, or seminar that you attend, you will likely get both classroom experience and hands on experience. Hands on experience means that you may not only get to watch a kitchen remodeling project being done, such as a new cabinet installation, but you may also get to try your hand at it.The quality of your kitchen remodeling project may affect your home’s value; so it is a good pract ice to collect all of the experience and training that you can.

If you are looking for a kitchen remodeling course, you may want to try the internet or your local newspaper.  In the United States, there are a number of career training centers that host classes and training seminars. Although the goal of these courses is to prepare students for a career in kitchen remodeling, you may still be able to learn about kitchen remodeling, particularly what you should or shouldn’t do. In fact, you may also find that you like remodeling things so much that you may even want to change your career path.  The only problem with taking a kitchen remodeling class that has a focus on career training is the cost.  The cost of these courses will all vary, but they will, almost always, cost money. The cost typically averages about fifty or hundred dollars per person.

If you are looking for a low-cost way to attend a kitchen remodeling seminar, you may want to contact one of your local home improvement stores. Many of the home improvement stores that operate on a national level offer training classes for their customers.  Many times, these classes only last a few hours, but the information that you can walk away with may be invaluable.  It is also important to note that the kitchen remodeling courses offered by most home improvement stores are more affordable; in fact, many are even free to attend. The only problem that you may find with these classes is that they tend to focus on only one project, such as new countertop installations.  If you are looking to remodel your whole kitchen, you may need to attend more than one class.

As previously mentioned, a kitchen remodeling training seminar, class, or course, may help you understand what you should and shouldn’t do when remodeling your kitchen. For instance, you may learn that you shouldn’t take shortcuts when remodeling your kitchen. You may also learn tips on how to do something quickly, but effectively, such as installing your new kitchen cabinets.  It is likely that safety will be touched on as well. A kitchen remodeling training course, class or seminar, may help you understand the importance of safety, as well as provide you with valuable tips on how to stay safe.Regardless of what you learn, you will likely walk away more informed.

Although it is advised that you take a kitchen remodeling training seminar, course, or class, especially if you do not have any previous home improvement experience, you may not want to.  If that is the case, it is advised that you at least follow all of the directions or instructions that you are given, if you were given any at all.
