Drawing a Layout of Your Granite Counter Tops

The days of free in-home estimates are long gone, thanks to the high costs of transportation. If you’re looking to install granite countertops, most fabricators now ask you to provide a layout of your existing counters for a free phone or email estimate. Your layout will be ready in no time if you follow these tips.

First draw your counter tops as squares and rectangles. Graphing paper works best, but a clean sheet of printer paper will be good in a pinch. It does not have to be to scale, but try to keep the right proportions of the layout. Sketch each and every counter, including peninsulas, islands, bar tops, and ledges. Clearly indicate the placement of your appliances. This will help you keep track of your measurements and gives the fabricators a visual representation of your kitchen.

Mark the sink as a square or draw a circle if you have a round sink. With laminate counter, the top mount sink is installed. Granite counters allow you to choose between top mounting and under mounting the sink. Under mount sinks require a polished cutout that exposes the pattern and color of the granite. Most sinks include a template for the cutout, because they come in multitude of sizes, shapes and styles. For the purpose of your drawing, size and shape do not matter, but you should specify top mount or under mount.

Most kitchens have a 4-inch or full backsplash. The most popular backsplashes are four-inch, but several options are available. Homeowners have different ideas abount backsplashes - some like full splash, some no backsplash at all. Backsplashes protect the walls from water and cover the wall bumps.

Granite splashes are commonly installed wherever the counter meets a wall. You can indicate backsplashes on your layout by drawing a narrow rectangle along each counter. Ask your fabricator to estimate the price for different backsplash options.

If your kitchen includes a cooktop, mark its location with a labeled rectangle. Cooktop cut-outs are usually fabricated at the installation site.

Finally, mark the finished edges with an “X.Because granite is a solid surface, different profiles can be carved along the exposed edge. Granite fabricators can produce an array of finished edge profiles that range in price. Mark edges that will be exposed.

Be sure to include information about your options: granite color, backsplash size (4”, full, or none), and finished edge profile. An accurate estimate will require these choices. At the end include all your contact information.

And that's it! You will need to take some measurements before you send your layout to the fabricator. It may help to have a friend around to hold the other end of the tape measure.

Canvas artworks are classic in the interior design communityBecause of their elegant and attractive nature, they never go out of style. Commissioned classical artworks, however, can be very expensive.Photographs mounted on canvas are a great alternative to this. Not only do photos on canvas give the same look and feel of a commissioned artwork, they easily brighten up any living space and bring a burst of colour and life in to the room.

With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can turn your own photographs into your own masterpieces. Photoshop’s various filters can spark anyone’s creativity. You can render your photographs to look like traditional artworks. Other things you can do are adding textures to your photos, playing with your photos’ colours and saturation, have it distorted and even transform it into an abstract art.

Artistic Effects. Your photos can be made to look as if it has been painted in water colour or in oil paint. You can even convert them into a coloured pencil drawing and charcoal sketches. You can control the resulting effects by adjusting the various options such as brush strokes length and strength, the amount of light and shadows, and even paper brightness.

Distortion. Distortion effects include ‘diffuse glow’, ‘glass’ and ‘ocean ripple’. A fog-like effect is the result of the filter ‘diffuse glow’. You can edit the amount of graininess and glow to your preference. Glass effect gives your photos a look as if you’re looking at it through a glass panel or even through an ice block.Ocean ripple creates an ocean-like surface on your photograph.

Textures. You can add various textures in your photographs to make it look as if it had been printed into various textiles.Such textile includes craquelure, grain, mosaic tiles, patchwork, texturizer, and stained glass.

Colour. You can edit your photos’ colours through the many options available. Play with your photos’ hue and saturation, render them as a classic black and white picture using the desaturate option, or transform them into pop art by using colour variations. Apply a sepia tone on your photos if you want to achieve an antiquated feel.

Blurring. You can easily change the depth of field of your picture by playing with the various blurring and smudging tools on most photo editing software. Soften your subject’s features by using the different blur filters, such as ‘radial blur’, which gives a hazy circular blur on your photo and ‘motion blur’, which gives off movement effects.

By experimenting with various effects and filters, you can come up with an artwork worthy to be mounted on canvas and displayed for everyone to enjoy. What’s more, your beautiful stretched  canvas art print can not only be used to decorate your walls, but it can also be a wonderful gift to family and friends.

Foreclosure Buyers Beware: Remember the Utilities

Posted by on August 13, 2009

foreclosures in sarasota florida

When purchasing a foreclosure in Sarasota Florida, one thing that one might not usually consider is the utilties. We all want to live comfortably but these days, that comes at a price. It will be challenging since money is a big issue but there are ways to save money even on utilities.

When we think of utilities, we are referring to things like electricity, water, cable and the phone. Will switching or canceling be the only answer? The answer is no because you can’t switch sometimes and there are ways to lower that.

Leaving appliances and lights on can ramp up your costs. Consider unplugging the electronics.

Fluorescent lights will shave dollars off your electric bill. It does not consume that much power and when you go out shopping for them, make sure that they maintain a Kelvin temperature of 2,600 to 3,000. These may be more expensive than incandescent but they will last 10 times that of a less efficient one andhaving to replace this model.

Do you use a heater for your new home? If you do, then you know quite well that it takes time before hot water comes out of the faucet. Until that happens, you waste water so if you want to speed up the heating process, better reinsulated the pipes that are connected to the heater.

A heater works more efficiently when turned. This could save you 10% on your electricity bills.

Some say you can save 5% of your electricity bill if you lower your heat just a notch. You can do this manually or install a machine that is designed to do that so choose which one you want to do.

Should you feel cold, perhaps something is coming inside the house like a draft. Buy and install weather strips around the frames of your windows and doors to deal with that.

Did you know you can save money when you wash your clothes using cold water instead of hot water? Yes you can save up to 50% of energy and the same goes for your dryer when you decide to use the moisture sensor and not the timer.

Since we are talking about laundry, make sure you do your laundry on a full load. This also applies if you have a dishwasher.

Have you ever forget to turn the lights off when you left the house in the morning? A timer will deal with any inefficiencies.

When you brush your teeth or take a shower, turn off the water when you are not washing up yet. To save water, change your shower head to an efficient model and fill your baths to a lower level.

Getting rid of those nast leaks in the house can help. If the foreclosure is in disrepair then it is a good idea to count on replacing the pipes as they are probably our of whack too.

There are more than one way to shave your bill on utilities so you should consider those that were mentioned and get to work. Follow this and you will see a nice savings.

How to make solar panels - fast and easy.

Many people today are searching for ways to have solar panels installed in their houses. It makes sense to use the power of the sun to make energy and save money over a long period of time.

Having other companies do it for you can be an expensive excercise. While it might be convenient, waiting years to enjoy the financial benefits of solar panels is not something people want to spend a lot of money on.

The tendency is that this puts people off. It also results in putting off the long term benefits until the next year.
The simple fact is you need not spend a lot of money installing solar panels.

Knowing how to make solar panels is not so difficult. With the right knowledge you would be able to make, install and get full benefit from solar power. Even getting the right materials is easy to get.
What is holding most people who want solar panels installed is not a lack of motivation, but not knowing how to make them. And it is not an overly difficult thing to make.

All you need is instruction manuals that are easy to follow and that tell you where to get everything you need.
The materials can be found in your local hardware store and most have common names like plywood, glass sheets and electrical wiring. Even the less common sounding material, photovoltaic cells can be found in hardware stores.
Tools required to build them are most likely already in most toolboxes.
What is missing is the knowledge of how to make solar panels.
Fortunately there are very good manuals around that can fill this gap.

The manuals are very reasonably priced and have step by step instructions that are easy to follow. And for a total outlay of $200 you can have your first fully installed solar panel that is able to supply at least a few decent appliances.
While saving more on your bill with each installation, you can also build at a rate which suits your budget.

Homeowners who have converted to solar power may qualify for a tax incentive.
So where do you find this information?

Homeowner’s Use of Alternative Energy Sources is No Longer a Dream of the Future

Posted by on August 13, 2009

As the economy continues to slide, energy costs in many parts of the world continue to skyrocket. Add to that the anxiety over global warming and many are beginning to give renewable energies a second look. Just what is the difference between alternative energy technology and renewable energy technology anyway? Alternative energy includes all renewable alternative energy sources, but includes matters such as nuclear power and energy from municipal waste. These are carbonaceous instances. Renewable energy technology centers on energy that is replenished as it’s being used, such as solar energy and wind energy.

Now that we’ve nailed that down, the question remains as to whether there are really gains on a household or small business level to implementing any sort of renewable resource technology. The short answer is, Definitely. By making the move to implement renewable energy technology on your home you will be able to save yourself thousands of dollars annually. Implementing these sorts of modifications has become increasingly more popular in the last few years and it’s become more and more painless to meet your home’s energy needs with just a bit of handyman work.

If you have the financial resources to invest in a commercially installed system, you may gain more efficient savings, however, savings can still be realized very quickly by researching and building your own renewable energies. With all of the data that is readily available, it is possible to construct renewable resources energy products like wind generators or solar panels, on your own. Do-it-yourselfers are saving huge sums of cash by constructing and installing these systems themselves.

Solar and wind power technology systems are gaining ground daily. Solar electrical systems have moved from monster roof panels to thin layers of film that are twice as conducive and work with less sunlight. Believe it or not, there are now even solar powered chargers for cell phones and other small household items. Wind Turbines have been created more aerodynamic for greater action and electricity generation. Keep your eyes open and you will notice clean energy technology along today’s major roadways as small solar/wind operation depots that power signs and lights.

How can you not get excited about this? The reality is that renewable resources technology is working and you can make it work for you in your home or business. The benefits are far-reaching, such that with increased use, clean energy technology could minimize the effects of global warming, help relieve financial strain and provide a world less dependent on fossil fuels. While these appear to be reward enough, were you aware that in many areas you can also profit from having alternative energy generation at your home? There are also quite a few things that you can do right now, today, for FREE, to start lowering your utility bill.

Use A Wind Turbine And Solar Energy To Power Your Home

Posted by on August 8, 2009

Fed up with having to pay your electricity bills?  You are not alone.A lot more people are switching every day to alternative energy sources rather than rely on the national grid.Electricity bills reached record highs in 2008 as the price of a barrel of oil closed in on $150 per barrel.  Over the next few years oil prices will soar again as remaining reserves become more expensive to extract. It therefore makes a lot of sense to switch to alternative types of energy to save money and the planet also.

When it comes to choice, most people select a wind turbine or solar cells to fully or partially power their homes, as they are the simplest and most reliable options.  Often, homeowners will combine the two sources with a battery pack.  By setting up their system in this way they are assuring their supply. For example, when prevailing winds are not strong enough to provide enough power, requirements can be topped up with the solar panels.  And with a battery pack as part of the system, energy can also be stored to be used at times when the turbine or solar cells are not keeping up with your household demands.

If you want to install your own wind generator or solar energy systems, you basically have two choices.  You can either buy a system or believe it or not, you could actually make your own.  The latter option is cheaper, and makes sense if you have the time to do it.Ther are several DIY renewable kits on the market today, plus there are guides available to show you how to build your own systems and source the components yourself, all for as little as $200!  That sort of cost has to be attractive!

To read more about building your own systems, and to see which kits and manuals I recommend, take a look at earth4energy.com review and read my reviews there.
